This form of drawknife was used mostly to shape wooden staves for barrels. Originally it had wooden handles. Barrels were used to store and ship all kinds of goods.
This drawknife was found during the 1998 archaeological excavation at a Birchtown house site (AkDi-23). This site yielded many more objects in a greater variety than expected. The presence of so many artifacts suggests that the occupants were better off materially than many other Loyalists.
