Basketry Tradition
|
An enlarged detail from a Notman Studio photograph of the
Halifax market in the 1880s shows a Black woman selling baskets.
Research links these baskets with Black women who immigrated
to Nova Scotia during the War of 1812. Rib-framed maple baskets
such as these are still
produced today by some of their descendants.
