One of a series of photographs taken of Mi'kmaq trapper Mike Martin, July 1979, showing the construction of a small wigwam. Here, Mr. Martin peels birchbark from a tree, to begin covering the wigwam. Since this was just a demonstration, he did not take the deeper layers of bark. Such a small tree would not have been used historically, because much larger specimens would have been available and preferable.
