Description

The West Pubnico aboiteau is of squared timber construction. It consists of two parallel square cut timbers with rectangular wooden planks fastened with wooden pegs to the top and bottom to form a roof and floor. The overall length of the aboiteau is 3.30 metres. Its width measures 37 centimetres. The aboiteau was resting on 4 perpendicular cut log sections spaced approximately 47 centimetres apart. The logs provided a firm foundation for the aboiteau to keep it from sinking into the soft mud below. The swing gate and several roof planks were missing and presumed lost to erosion. The gate would open to allow fresh water to flow out of the marsh and would close against the incoming tide. Grooves which once held the gate in place are visible at the seaward end of the sluice.
