The Excavation

We returned to the site on the morning of October 24, 1995 and were met by Ted D'Eon and other members of the local community. After a short wait for the tide to go down the excavation work began. The marsh mud and gravel was carefully removed from the top and sides of the aboiteau with shovels and hoe. After the structure was photographed it was lifted by hand and placed on a specially designed "aboiteau stretcher". The water-logged aboiteau was then carried by nine people across the marsh, a distance of about 300 metres, to a waiting Jeep and trailer. It was then towed slowly to a nearby garage for conservation and storage.
