The Rock Mounds
![]() |
There have been two rock mound complexes identified in Birchtown, AkDi-21 and AkDi-31. Their purpose has thus far eluded all observers. They do not appear to be the result of field clearance activity. The complexes take up space, rather than create it. The mound heights range from approximately 30 centimetres to around a metre and a half. Descendents of the Black Loyalist settlers feel that their purpose was spiritual. The mounds incorporate small rocks for the apparent support of larger rocks, thus creating a seemingly purposeful shape. We are seeking input from our visitors in the hopes of moving closer to an explanation of these fascinating, if enigmatic, features. E-mail us your ideas and participate in our discussion of them. Serious responses will regularly be posted on our discussion bulletin board. |
