Archaeological Sites at Birchtown: AkDi-11

Site of AkDi-11 at Birchtown, Nova Scotia
Identified in the course of the 1993 Birchtown Archaeological Survey, AkDi-11 is an architecturally complex site. Testing in 1993 recovered 118 artifacts. A date range of 1850-1900 was assigned based on this assemblage. The material was recovered from in and around the cellar feature believed to be the house, while the cellar believed to be the barn yielded no artifacts. Both cellars are constructed with cut and field stones. The complexity and seeming lack of organization in the formation of the many walls indicate a long term occupancy with a slow and additive fashion of construction. It took three days, in 1999, to map AkDi-11, however more work is required to interpret the many features of this site.Go back to Archaeological Sites page
