Archaeological Sites at Birchtown: AkDi-22

Site of AkDi-22 at Birchtown, Nova Scotia

AkDi-22 was first shown to archaeologists in 1998 by a local resident. It was shovel tested that year, but no artifacts were found. Without artifacts, no date range can be confidently assigned to this site, however, the construction techniques used, as well as the morphology of the walled enclosure and the associated depression feature (with likely hearth/chimney remains) indicate a highly probable association with other Black Loyalist sites in Birchtown. Further archaeological testing must be carried out to determine the date range of this site and to interpret its features and morphology.  Go back to Archaeological Sites page
