Archaeological Sites at Birchtown: AkDi-5

AkDi-5 archaeological site at Birchtown, Nova Scotia

This nineteenth century site has two distinct cellars, AkDi-5A and AkDi-5B. One cellar appears to be domestic (5A), while the other appears to be agricultural (5B). The site was identified in 1992 and shovel tested. This produced artifacts from the first quarter of the nineteenth century. In 1993, trowel tests were carried out, yielding pearlware, refined earthenware, clear & dark green glass and machine cut nails. In 1994, students from a field school run by Saint Mary's University reported more artifacts supporting this time period, including pearlware, creamware, white ware, bottle and window glass, machine cut nails, barbed wire, a cast iron pot fragment, pipe bowl fragments and a pipe stem.
