Have you ever felt a 19th-century mill in operation? *Turning Oats

Processing oats is a 3 day process that generally starts on Tuesday with drying in the kiln.
Wednesday the oats are then shelled twice using the local sandstones. Thursday the shelled oats are ground, sifted, bagged & ready for you to buy and enjoy at the mill gift shop. Friday & Saturday the miller usually produces wholewheat flour (sometimes buckwheat) or works on mill maintenance. Saturday & Sunday the mill does not operate but certain limited aspects of the operation may be available for the visitors.

Sutherland Steam Mill

Just 12.5 kms from the Grist Mill, the Steam Mill represents the next stage of Nova Scotia’s Industrial Revolution heritage, and is a perfect compliment to a visit to Balmoral.

* All aspects of mill operation are subject to change without notice. Preservation of this precious part of Nova Scotian heritage is our number one priority. Please call to confirm the operational status of the mill.
