Acker site: British Navy Boarding Axe
An
axe of this type was used when boarding enemy ships during
the period 1750–1850. It was also a popular weapon with
some of the Loyalist land forces. When used by infantry,
the handle was probably shorter than the reproduction used
here.
This one was found during the 1998 archaeological excavation
at a Birchtown house site (AkDi-23). This site yielded many
more objects in a greater variety than expected. The presence
of so many artifacts suggests that the occupants were better
off materially than many other Loyalists. The presence of
this axe suggests someone with a military background lived
at this site. |
