Acker site: Man's Shoe Buckle Frame

Shoe buckles were popular throughout the 1700s. They began to go out of fashion after the French Revolution and are rarely found on archaeological sites dated after 1815. This copper-alloy frame is very elaborate and features a leaf pattern. The two straps of the eighteenth-century shoe would have overlapped and been secured by the chape and tongue of the buckle.
