When Thomas Richardson died in 1829, he owned a pair of oxen as well as a horse and foal. Oxen provided the chief source of power on most farms in Nova Scotia until about 1850. They were cheap to feed and once trained, they were steady workers whose slowness made them easy on whatever equipment they were pulling. Oxen were of mixed breeds and usually much smaller than oxen of today.
