John
Farmer in the 1920s, Birchtown
|
Nova Scotian writer Clara Dennis interviewed John Farmer in
the 1920s, when he was an old man. His grandparents had been
slaves: Jupiter, in New Brunswick (a town in New Jersey); Venus, in Charleston, South Carolina.
He showed Dennis the remains of Pit houses near Birchtown, and
told her how Venus, a "smart woman," helped support their many
children by her knitting. |
