In the 1800s, the Barrington Woolen Mill was a revolutionary local business that transformed raw fleece into the yarn and cloth needed to make local fishermen warm and durable wool clothing.
Imagine what it would have once been like inside the bustling mill, listening to the steady rhythm of the spinner, twister, skeiner and loom as they washed, picked, carded, spun, dyed and wove wool; all powered by the rushing water of the mill’s river.
Discover how this busy mill saved Nova Scotian women endless hours of washing, spinning and weaving their wool at home. See the very machinery that changed a way of life and hear stories about the mill workers and their days as part of a thriving new industry.
Every Saturday, visitors are welcome to join the Mill’s rug hooking circle from 10 am to noon. From noon to 3 pm on the 15th day of each month, kids aged 7 to 13 years are invited to enjoy free admission and learn how to wash, dye and spin wool.
