The Confederate cruiser CSS Tallahassee was one of the most successful commerce raiders during the US Civil War. On August 18th, 1864, she arrived in Halifax to take on supplies and repair her broken rudder. Granted a twelve hour extension to the 24 hour neutrality pact, her captain, John Taylor Wood learned that two Union gunboats were lying in wait for her at the harbour entrance.
