We would like to thank The Royal Ontario Museum and Tysons’ Fine Minerals for their mineral displays at the front of the arena.
Join us at 7:00 pm August 14th at the Fundy Geological Museum for a presentation by Rob Fensome and Graham Williams: Evolution, Fossils and Nova Scotia Rocks
Almost 150 years ago, in November 1859, Charles Darwin introduced the concept of natural selection as a principal mechanism of evolution in his book On the Origin of Species. At the time, no one knew the age of the Earth or of milestones in our planet’s history. And the continents were believed to be fixed in position. Since 1859, we have seen the advent of radiometric dating, plate tectonics and genetic studies using DNA and other molecules. All have been revolutionary developments. In the early years of the new millennium, scientists are piecing together all these lines of evidence to provide a holistic understanding of the history of life and our planet. In this presentation, Rob and Graham will look through the lens of this new world view at the rocks and fossils of Nova Scotia.
The Gemcutter’s Ball
The weekend of August 14 to 16 marks the 44th annual Nova Scotia Mineral and Gem Show, in Parrsboro on the Bay of Fundy. This show ranks among the top in Canada. And since gems and jewellery are “finer things” they seem to partner naturally with fine music!
Thus there’s an evening of musical magic in store on Saturday of the gem show weekend when the 13 piece Elastic Big Band plays luxurious, elegant, room filling big band swing in the Parrsboro Bandhall, a 125 year old former Presbyterian church.
You’ll be transported to, let’s say, the elegance of 1930’s New York, where unattainable women with impossible emeralds drift around men in three piece suits while Humphrey Bogart calls a cab across the corner. This is spellbinding, enchanting, glorious, musical magic.
Dress code is casual with focus on fun. By all means dust off your old neglected Coco Chanel gown and shine up your antique jewelry. Bring approved liquor ID.
Saturday Aug 15th, Parrsboro Bandhall., 9pm to 1 am. Advance tickets single $15, couple $25; tickets at door single $19, couple $29. For reservations call 902 254 3674; for more info on the Ball, the band and the bandhall - and to reserve tickets by email go here: www.virtualfundy.com/gemcuttersball.html
Nova Scotia Gem and Mineral Show and Sale
The weekend of August 14 to 16 marks the 44th annual Nova Scotia Gem and Mineral Show and Sale, in Parrsboro on the Bay of Fundy. Parrsboro’s Rockhound Roundup is one of the oldest mineral shows in Canada and in terms of sheer enjoyableness, it’s considered to be the top! Exhibitors return each year from Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Maine ready to enjoy the Maritime hospitality and meet new and old friends.
More than thirty exhibitors offer a broad mix of earth treasures. You’ll see fine mineral specimens, jewellery and jeweller’s supplies and precious stones and gem cutting tools; beads and beading
tools; fossils, tumbled stones and more.
It’s a learning show too, with geological field trips and interpretive walks plus demonstrations of gem cutting and jewellery making, gold panning, wire wrapping and more. The Nova Scotia Metal Arts Guild will be present showing the work of Nova Scotia silver and goldsmiths. Geologists and mineral collectors from the N.S. Department of Natural Resources, Atlantic GeoScience Society, N.S. Prospectors Association and the N.S. Gem and Mineral Society will be on hand to identify your mineral treasures. And, the Royal Ontario Museum is showing a traveling display of superlative Canadian minerals.
Admission is $ 3 per person (children under 12 free if accompanied by an adult)
Show hours 10 am – 7 pm Friday and Saturday, 10 am - 5 pm on Sunday.
