Teacher,
Ellenvale Junior High
The
entire program is great. I thought that in terms of our past
trips,
this year was the best program of all. There was a good range of
activities
and everything was so well organized and smooth running.
Donald
McDougal, Science Chair/Service
Learning
Coordinator, Maine School Administrative District #48, Newport, Maine
for
the past six years, our school district has sponsored a two-day
workshop
at the Fundy Geological Museum during the fall. The group numbers
between 20 and 30 people with a 50/50 student/teacher mix. In
addition
to career exploration for the students and technical knowledge fro all,
the experience builds a solid group for the upcoming year's work in an
efficient non-threating way. For 2002 I would ask that you plan a
week long program for my teachers that would inlcude a larger part of
Nova
Scotia.
Museums are
in the education
business just as schools are (except they don't have a captive audience
but have to get people to want to pay to attend and learn).
The facility
offers a unique
program of staff development providing technical knowledge and pedagogy
of good science education. The focused, well coordinated mix of
speakers,
audiovisuals, activities, exhibits, and guided tours of geological
formations
truly demonstrates the concept of science "Classrooms Without Walls".
"Behind the
scene" activities
show participants how to prepare, conserve, and display science
materials
and information. The flexibility and innovative use of resources by
museum
staff results in a custom built interdisciplinary workshop suited for
students
and teachers with and without science backgrounds where all cal
participate
equally.
One of our
participants this
year is responsible for Global Studies and Ancient History. As a result
of the two days he has modified the focus of those courses to includes
earth conditions and resources as factors in the development of human
histories.
For its
value as a technical
resource and its impacts on Science Education beyond tradition areas,
the
Fundy Geological Museum deserves the highest compliments."
(We
have organized a teacher's in-service with this group for
the
past 6 years and this year, we are hosting EdGEO 2005

Kassandra,
grade 6 student in Humble Park School, Dartmouth,
"Thanks alot for
letting us come to the museum. It was really fun. I liked making the
necklace.
I really like the rock on my necklace.."
Avik,
grade 6 student in Halifax, "When I arrived to Parrsboro I was
excited,
especially when I heard about the things we were going to do. I really
enjoyed the museeum. It was really cool going to a restaurant. When
going
to the beaches I found many special rocks and thought they were
fossils.
Your guides told me they were not fossils, they were nice anyway."
Kevin,
Nokomis High School, Nokomis Maine, "Just wanted to "Thank You" for the
excellent work you did in organizing our weekend at the Museum. I was
part
of the group from Nokomis High School. The Schedule went smoothly, the
speakers were very knowledgeable and excited about the work that they
passed
that on to us, the activities were well thought out and planned. Time,
which is the only culprit when planning an event, was the only draw
back.
Please let us know if there is anything we can do to help promote the
museum."

Carol
Warster, bus driver, parent and
chaperon,
Lee/Winn School Maine, USA, "I just had to write to you and thank you
for
the wonderful time we had at your museum. My sons fourth grade class
from
Lee/Winn school visited your museum for two nights and three
days.
I was the bus driver, and also a parent and chaperone.
The program
at the museum
was well planned. The workshops and labs were fun and interesting. The
guided beach tours were also a good learning experience for the
children.
The guides were very helpful and knowledgeable about the fossils and
minerals.
This is
something that the
children will always remember. I want to thank you for being part of
it.
I will recommend this trip to anyone interested in Dinosaurs. Even
though
it was a nine hour trip one way, it was well worth it."
