Every October the Celtic Colours Festival comes to the Highland
Village. There will be special workshops, concerts and other events.
Friday, October 9 - Gaelic Film Series - Hallaig
Hallaig, the film, explores visually Gaelic poet Sorley MacLean’s classing poem “Hallaig.” Originally composed in Gaelic, its words describe images of loss and memories of the Gaelic community on the Isle of Raasay. 2 pm. Free admission.
Monday, October 12 - Cairtean Cuibhle s Beairt/Pioneer Textile Tour
Join expert weaver Vicki Quimby for a two-hour tour of the site while discussing cloth production in the historical lives of rural Nova Scotian Gaels. This informed tour will move from building to building as it examines textiles in each of the houses, the tools that made them and their importance to their relevant time period. The tour will conclude with a traditional Scottish tea and oatcakes. 1 to 3 pm. $10 per person. 13% HST included.
Tuesday, October 13 - Gaelic Film Series - Fàgail Bharraidh
Fàgail Bharriadh - In October 2006, a group of Scottish Gaels originally hailing from the Isle of Barra, toured Cape Breton Island in search of Nova Scotia’s Gaelic language traditions and relatives. Their visit was recorded by a Media nan Eilean film crew, resulting in a 44 minute production broadcast nationally in Scotland. 2 pm. Free admission.
Wednesday, October 14 - Gaelic Film Series - Gaelic Cape Breton Show
The Gaelic Cape Breton Show at Little Theatre, UCCB. Taped in 1989, a concert featuring some of Cape Breton Island’s most recognised performers today including Dave MacIsaac, Willie Kennedy, the late John Morris Rankin, Willie Fraser, Natalie MacMaster and traditional Gaelic singers.. 2 pm. Free admission.
Wednesday, October 14 - Joe Neil MacNeil Memorial Lecture - Dr. John Gibson is this year's guest lecturer for the annual Joe Neil MacNeil Memorial Lecture. "The Strange case of a Scottish Governor of Medina" will examine the life of Scotsman Thomas Keith, who rose to military eminence in the Egyptian army between 1807 and 1815. The lecture begins at 1 pm. Admission is free.
Wednesday, October 14 - Cuairt nan Coinnlean/Candlelight Tour
Come join us for an intimate evening featuring a storytelling tour of this living history site and Cape Breton sunset. 6-8 pm. $12 adult, $28 family, $5 students. Prepaid reservations required. No refunds or discounts. 13% HST included.
Thursday, October 15 - Gaelic Song Workshop
Scottish singers will be featured in this special workshop on Gaelic song. 1-3 pm. Free admission.
Thursday, October 15 - "Waters of Iona" Celtic Colours Concert (SOLD OUT) - The Highland Village in Iona is one of Cape Breton's treasures. It tells the story of the settlement of the island by the Highland Scots. One of most recent additions to the village is the former Malagawatch Church which was moved down the lake by barge and placed high above the waters of the Bras d'Or Lakes. It makes an historic and picturesque setting for this concert which will celebrate the traditions that are carried on to this day. Born in Cape Breton and raised in Antigonish County, Lewis MacKinnon sings in English, Scottish Gaelic and Irish, and has performed in coffee shops, pubs, convention centres, theatres and concert halls throughout Eastern Canada since 1994. Irish pipers Gay McKeon and Seán McKeon play uilleann pipes, Seán influenced by his father Gay, developing his keen interest in the older generation of musicians. Shawn MacDonald is a well-known Cape Breton fiddler who comes from a large musical family. He has performed at folk festival events throughout Scotland and Ireland, Anita MacDonald is an accomplished musician, dancer and Gaelic singer who has just graduated from high school and works with the cultural component of the Highland Village Museum in her spare time. Susan MacLean, born and raised in nearby Washabuck, has performed with various Cape Breton musicians at dances, concerts and house rackets and taught Cape Breton style piano accompaniment for many years at St. Ann's Gaelic College. 7:30 pm. $20 per person. Friday, October 16 - Mask Making Workshop
In preparation for Oidhche Shamhna, Marlene Ivey, art and design professional recently returned from Scotland, will instruct on the making of masks inspired by the Gaelic traditions of All Hallows Eve. The ancient Celts believed that Halloween night marked the year’s change from a time of light to darkness. A brief interim of one evening allowed the dead the walk with the living. Masks were worn to frighten capricious spirits.10 am to 4 pm. $30 per person.
Sunday, October 18 - Closing Day for the Museum site
This is the last day to visit the living history site for the 2008 season.

Come and celebrate Halloween with a special evening tour of the
Highland Village by lamp light, complete with storytelling, skits
and special effects. The tour is followed by a storytelling session
in "The Tuning Room" with fourag, oatcakes and more.
