Notice to Teachers

Due to major building repairs at 1747 Summer Street, the Nova Scotia Museum of Natural History will be closed to the public from Mon., Sept. 14 until early 2010. In addition, education programs, including school classes, school kits for loan, as well as self-guided tours of the museum galleries for school classes will be unavailable until after January 2010.

The repairs to the building represent positive changes to Museum infrastructure that will result in a safer, healthier environment for staff and visitors. While the building undergoes this work, Museum staff will be busy reviewing and revising some of our educational offerings with the goal of matching our programs to your needs, and maximizing the learning experience for all visiting learners.

Self Tours 2010 Groups can visit the Museum for self-tours beginning Tues., Jan. 5, 2010. To make a booking for a self-tour, contact Heather McKinnon, Coordinator of Education Programs after September 8, 2009, at (902) 424-6512 or email mckinnhm@gov.ns.ca.

School Programs 2010 Our hands-on, interactive school classes provide many students with a unique educational experience. That tradition will continue in 2010 with enhanced opportunities for learning! In Spring 2010, we will offer some new programs for specific grade levels that better serve the needs of educators and meet the required curriculum outcomes. Topics will include:

  • Needs & Characteristics of Living Things
  • Diversity of Life
  • Geology

To allow us to schedule programs better suited to today's curricula, classes such as “Big Whales for Little People”, “Climate Change Challenge” and “Be a Mammal Detective” will no longer be available.

Visit museum.gov.ns.ca/learn for updated information on our educational programs. For more information on school class programs at the Museum of Natural History, contact Heather McKinnon, Coordinator of Education Programs, after September 8, 2009, at (902) 424-6512 or email mckinnhm@gov.ns.ca.

Museum Kits and Specimens 2010

The museum kits-for-loan program features curiosity-stimulating containers full of artifacts, natural specimens and animal specimens for teachers to use in their classroom at no cost. Our most popular kits are being renewed in 2009 order to focus on specific learning outcomes in the curriculum and the changing needs of today's students. New features in 2010 will include junior (P-6) and advanced (7-12) versions of the kits, lesson plans, and online teacher manuals that will accompany the box of hands-on items. Renewed versions of two of our most popular kits will be ready to book in January, 2010:

  • Geology of Nova Scotia (formerly "Rocks and Minerals Kit", "Mineral Testing Kit", and "Geology Kit")
  • L'nu - First Peoples of Nova Scotia (formerly " First Peoples Kit")

More information about these new kits will be available in the fall through the Online Learning Resources Catalogue at museum.gov.ns.ca/learn If you have any questions, feel free to contact the Maggie MacIntyre, Coordinator of Education Outreach, during normal business hours starting September 8, 2009, at (902) 424-6524 or macintmf@gov.ns.ca
