Maitland Launch Day
Sunday, August 28, from 10 to 5
The CHArt Society and the Lawrence House Museum invite you to help celebrate its shipbuilding heritage at the 25th Annual Launch Day Festival. Join us on the museum grounds to commemorate the launch of the W.D. Lawrence, the largest wooden hulled, full rigged vessel ever built in Canada! During the Golden Age of Sail launch days were big events. More than 100 vessels were launched in the Maitland area, and a thousand workers paid in the village alone. Villagers are dressed in their Victorian best while displays and demonstrations of traditional skills and crafts take place throughout the day. Watch the non-motorized costumed processional make its way through town to the original home of the shipbuilder himself. A bay side re-enactment of the Launch using a 17-foot scale model of the great ship, and a re-enactment of the banishment of the Whiskey Peddlers rounds out the day. Fun for all ages!
This event and museum admission for the day are free, however, donations to the local food bank are gratefully accepted. For more information, call 902-261-2628.
