Why buy it...
The Maritime Museum of the Atlantic in Halifax is offering several new boat building and repair workshops this summer. There is something for every interest and skill level, so everyone should be able to find something that appeals to them.Minimum age for registration is 18 years. Each student should have some basic knowledge of woodworking tools and techniques. A complete tool list will be available prior to the start of each course. At the end of each course, one of the participants will have the opportunity to purchase the boat for cost of materials. Register by calling 902-424-7490 or in person at the museum. Traditional Boat Caulking Saturday, April 1, 2006 10 am to 3 pm |
Instructor: John Langan Fee: $45.00 (plus HST) Max Registration: 8 people John Langan has been a professional caulker for 20 years and is passionate in his desire to share his craft. Using the Steven’s S-Class sloop that the Museum is presently restoring, John will lead a course on how to caulk the seams in the traditional manner, using irons, mallets and cotton. This course is a must for anyone who owns a wooden boat. |

Fibreglass Boat Repair Saturday, April 29, 2006 10am to 2pm |
Instructor: Bryan Smithe, YachtSmiths International Fee: $45.00 (plus HST) Max Registration: 15 people Bryan Smithe from YachtSmiths International will present an informative course focusing on the concerns of the fibreglass boat owner. Topics of discussion will include hull production and hull lay-up, product compatibility and hull fatigue. Practical demonstrations include gel coat and minor hull repair. Fundamentals of Boatbuilding Building a Shelburne Dory Monday, July 10 to Saturday, July 15, 2006

Instructor: Milford Buchanan, Dory Builder, J.C. Williams Dory Shop Museum Fee: $500.00 (plus HST) Max Registration: 6 people Learn how to build a dory from one of Nova Scotia's most skilled boat builders and a man who knows all the tricks of the trade. This handsome eighteen foot boat will be built over five days using traditional materials and tools. On the sixth day, you'll launch her and take her for a row. |

Fundamentals of Boatbuilding The Westport Pond Boat Monday, July 24 to Saturday, July 29, 2006 |
Instructor: Wyatt Lawrence Fee: $500.00 (plus HST) Max Registration: 6 people Wyatt Lawrence will once again be building the popular Westport Pond Boat. This attractive fourteen foot boat combines two styles of traditional planking with elements of larger boat construction. This course is well suited to the individual who might have a larger boat building project in mind. |

Fundamentals of Boatbuilding Building a Nutshell Pram Monday, August 21 to Saturday, August 26, 2006 |
Instructor: John Langan Fee: $500.00 (plus HST) Max Registration: 6 people John Langan is not only a professional caulker but also a professional boat builder. This popular and versatile little boat will be built using marine grade plywood and epoxy. The goal of this course is to familiarize the students with epoxies and this building method so that they may adapt it towards other designs. |

Build your own Kayak Saturday, September 9 to Saturday, September 23, 2006 (6 evenings, one weekend) |
Instructor: Kayak Guy Ltd. Fee: $1695.00 (plus HST) Build your own Queen Charlotte or Charlotte XL stitch and glue kayak in this course from Bryan Darrell, a.k.a. "The Kayak Guy". Bryan has been teaching this course for seven years and is confident that he can get anyone to complete and launch their own kayak in forty hours.
