Boatbuilding Workshops

Shelburne Dory Workshop

This site is designed to give people a taste for the types
of boatbuilding workshops that we offer at the Museum.

If you like what you see and are interested in developing your own boatbuilding skills, watch this space in February, 2006 for a list of our upcoming workshops for next summer.

The Shelburne Dory Workshop
During the week of July 11, 2005, Milford Buchanan from the John Williams Dory Shop Museum in Shelburne led a workshop in which participants Andrew Harding, John Sobolewski, Joseph McKay and Carl D'Entremont constructed a replica of a late 19th century Shelburne Dory. This handsome little craft measured 17 feet and was launched at the Museum wharves on the morning of July 16. Mister McKay put in a bid for the dory and is now the proud owner of Liscombe Log.

Below are some photos taken during the workshop and the launch ceremony.

Fundamentals of Boatbuilding Workshop

The Fundamentals of Boatbuilding
During the week of July 25, 2005, Wyatt Lawrence, who has apprenticed with Harold Bryan in New Brunswick and has worked for the Nova Scotia Sea School, led a workshop in which participants Roman Dusanowskyj, Markus Feiel, Andrew Harding, Ian McKay and Neville Ralph constructed a replica of a 1920s Westport Pond Boat. This terrific example of Nova Scotian boatbuilding skill measures 12 feet and was launched at the Museum wharves on the morning of July 30 during the Halifax Waterfront's Natal Day Celebrations. Neville Ralph is now the proud owner of this beautiful little craft.

Norwegian Sailing Pram Workshop

The Nutshell Pram
During the week of August 22, 2005, Kate Langan, who has worked for the Nova Scotia Sea School and has studied under American boatbuilder Simon Watts led a workshop in which participants Dawn Farrington, Nicholas Field, Andrew Harding and Laura Meiklejohn constructed a lovely Nutshell Pram. This beautiful little vessel is the second of its class constructed at the Museum over the years and was launched at the Museum wharves on the morning of August 27 in a fun and memorable ceremony conducted by Maritime Museum boatbuilder Eamonn Doorly. Nicholas Field is now the proud owner of this beautiful little craft.

Below are some photos taken during the workshop and the launch ceremony.
