Exhibit Opening and Book Launch: Tuesday, June 6 7:00 p.m. Exhibit Ends October 29 |
Transport yourself to the last days of Nova Scotia’s schooners under sail through the stunning photographs of Frederick William Wallace . Come aboard the Albert J. Lutz, the Dorothy M. Smart, the Dorothy G. Snow, and the famous Effie M. Morrissey. Meet Captains John Apt, Harry Ross, Ansel Snow, and Arthur Longmire; and join dory-mates Jim Tidd and Judson Handspiker as they battle the winds of the Atlantic and set trawl in high seas. This exhibit is guest curated by M. Brook Taylor author of the new book by Goose Lane Editions "A Camera on the Banks: Frederick William Wallace and the Fishermen of Nova Scotia." A NOTE FROM OUR GUEST CURATOR My initial attraction to this project was inspired by an academic question: what would a historical narrative look like if one began with photographs rather than documents, put images rather than words at the centre of the tale? Frederick William Wallace’s photographs provided a remarkable test case, and they drew me into the foreign realm of schooners and fishing. I am glad they did. M.
