Description
Janet Glory was a small bulk carrier, capable of loading at smaller ore terminals.
Story
JANET GLORY was outbound with a load of barite from Walton in foggy weather. Navigating the heavy tidal currents of the Minas Channel, she struck very close to Spencers Island. After three hours of reversing engines, the vessel was freed from the rocks but immediately took on large amounts of water. Attempts to anchor failed. The crew of 29 plus the captain and his wife successfully took to the lifeboats and rowed to the Spencers Island wharf. Three lobster fishermen boarded the abandoned hull for salvage. About a half hour later, JANET GLORY exploded and sank, killing the three fishermen and sinking their fishing boat. It is believed the engines were still very hot from working the freighter off the rocks and they exploded when cold seawater flooded the engine room. Only one body was recovered.
