Shipwreck Details

Description
|
This Nova Scotian built vessel is arguably the western world's most famous mystery ship. She is better known as MARY CELESTE, the name under which she was found mysteriously sailing by herself with no trace of her crew in 1872, a mystery which has never been solved. She had an ill-fated career, killing three of her captains, one entire crew and losing money for most of her owners.

Story
|
This shipwreck launched a chain of events which resulted in AMAZON changing ownership, nationality and name to become the famous mystery ship MARY CELESTE. Sailing from Halifax to Glace Bay to load coal, AMAZON was blown ashore in a gale from her anchorage where she was awaiting loading. She suffered heavy damage and her master William Thompson sold her to two men from Glace Bay. They salvaged and repaired her and a year later sold her to Richard Haines in New York. These new owners changed her name to MARY CELESTE, the name under which she became famous in 1872 when her crew mysteriously disappeared.
