Interested in Volunteering?

The Maritime Museum of the Atlantic is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to creating an awareness, appreciation and understanding of Nova Scotia's rich maritime heritage. Many interpretive programs, tours and activities could not take place without the active role of dedicated volunteers.

To learn specific details about the Museum's two main volunteer opportunities please visit our Volunteering with the Public page and our Volunteering with School Groups page.

Who Can Volunteer?

All potential volunteers receive some level of screening, ranging from a application form and personal interview with staff, to more formal background checks. The degree of screening depends on the level of risk to Museum visitors and collections. While some background in maritime or cultural history is useful, it is not absolutely necessary for all positions. What Museum volunteers do have in common is an interest in people, museums, and the cultural history of Nova Scotia. Being a Museum volunteer enables you to learn about a new topic or share your knowledge with others. It also fives you the opportunity to improve your speaking and presentation skills. You will meet an interesting assortment of people and you will be making a genuine contribution to Museum programs.

All volunteers are expected to participate in required training that is pertinent to the specific program with which you will be involved. Volunteers are also expected to be reliable, arriving for shifts on time and conduction themselves in a professional and helpful manner.
