The Halifax Field Naturalists
Butterflies of Nova Scotia Field Checklist

This checklist was prepared by the Halifax Field Naturalists and produced with the assistance of the N. S. Museum of Natural History. It lists all species which are known to have bred in the province, or are regular strays. For ease of use, the classification order follows Opler, Paul A., 1992, A Field Guide to Eastern Butterflies. Additions and amendments to this checklist are welcomed. Print copies of the checklist may be obtained from the Museum shop or:

Acknowledgements: We thank Fred Scott and Dr. Ken Neil for their constructive criticism. A handbook on the butterflies of the Maritime Provinces by Dr. Neil is forthcoming.

Many of the species in this list are not broadly distributed, even in apparently suitable habitat, but are found only in small and scattered populations. Species which are unlikely to be encountered casually are marked with an asterisk(*). Species which are difficult to identify reliably without close inspection are marked with a plus sign (+)
