Eared Grebe

Podiceps nigricollis (Brehm)

Status Two sight records. The first was seen at Sambro, Halifax County, on 1 January 1967 by Charles R.K. Allen, Benjamin K. Doane and other participants in the Halifax West Christmas Bird Count. It was minutely studied at ranges as close as 30 m and convincingly described. Another was seen by Betty June and Sidney Smith at Cape Sable on 7 January 1977.

Remarks The Eared Grebe on this continent is a western species whose range in winter is normally along the Pacific coast. A few, however, have been reported on the Atlantic coast from New England south.
