Western Grebe

Western Grebe Aechmorphus occidentalis (Lawrence)

Status One sight record. A convincingly described bird was seen by Betty June Smith on a beach at Cape Sable on 6 February 1970. The bird was startled from the edge of the water at very close range.

Remarks Recently the "light morph" of the Western Grebe has been proposed as a species (Aechmorphus clarkii), so there is a remote possibility that the Cape Sable bird was not Aechmorphus occidentalis. The Western Grebe has been seen occasionally in New England waters.
