Yellow-nosed Albatross

Diomedea chlororhynchos Gmelin

Status Two sight records. An albatross seen by Edward V. Thompson from MV Bluenose on 12 July 1968 about 50 km off Yarmouth had the field marks of this species. Another adult or near-adult was identified by Dan Salisbury and others on 20 August 1976 about 70 km west of Yarmouth.

Remarks This species is similar to but slightly smaller than the Black-browed Albatross. It has a black bill, yellow along the crest in adults, and narrower dark borders on the underwings than the Black-browed. The nearest breeding grounds to Nova Scotia are in the Tristan da Cunha group of islands in the South Atlantic. An individual of this species was collected on 1 August 1913 off Grand Manan Island, New Brunswick.
