Limpkin Family Aramidae

Limpkin

Aramus guarauna (Linnaeus)

Status Three sight records. A bird was closely observed on Sable Island by Christel and Norman Bell on 12 September 1964, and another was seen there briefly by them on 27 November 1967 (McLaren 1981a). An injured bird was captured under wharves on Brier Island in the mid-1950s and examined in the hand by Wickerson Lent who identified the bird only retrospectively.

Remarks Although this southern species otherwise has not been recorded on the Atlantic coast north of Maryland, these sightings by knowledgeable observers are convincing evidence of its occurrence in the province.
