Black-necked Stilt Family Recurvirostridae

Black-necked Stilt

Himantopus mexicanus (Muller)

Status Two records. The first was the sighting of four by Nettie Moore at Canning, Kings County, on 23 September 1965 (Bagg and Emery 1966). On 27 May 1979 two at Cape Sable were filmed by BettyJune and Sydney Smith.

Remarks Black above, white below with a long slender bill and extremely long red legs, this large shorebird (33-43 cm, or about the size of the Greater Yellowlegs) is not apt to be confused with any other. The species has also been recorded in Newfoundland and New Brunswick, but in eastern North America it does not nest north of Delaware. It seems to be expanding its breeding range.
