Common Ground-Dove

Columbina passerina (Linnaeus)

Status One record. A report of this readily identified species in Shelburne County in October 1966 was convincingly referred to by Harrison Lewis in his column in the Shelburne Coast Guard:

"On October 10, as Mr. and Mrs. [Donald] Robertson and two friends were driving through Middle Ohio, they saw a Ground-Dove standing beside the road and stopped to watch it. Soon it flew across the road into a tree. Thus the observers, all of whom knew this species in Florida, had a good view of this stray individual as it stood on the ground and flew. They noted its small size, rufous wings, and stubby black tail."

Remarks This species occasionally has occurred north of its normal range in the southeastern United States, at least to New York and Ontario, so its appearance here is not extraordinary.
