Great Gray OwlStrix nebulosa (Forster)StatusThree records. One specimen was shot at Northport, Cumberland County, in June 1903 and another taken in Pictou County before 1882 (Gilpin 1881). The only recent record was of a bird well studied near Berwick, Annapolis County, on 26 March 1976 (G.R. Boyd et al.). Remarks Its normal range lies far to the north and west of Nova Scotia. Although its periodic invasions southward have brought it in recent years to New Brunswick and Maine, Nova Scotia has not been reached by significant numbers. In general appearance it suggests an overgrown Barred Owl, but its eyes are typically yellow, whereas those of its smaller counterpart are dark brown or black. |
