Yellow-throated Vireo

Yellow-throated Vireo

Vireo flavifrons Vieillot

Status Rare vagrant. The first record of this rarity was of a male picked up dead at Indian Harbour, Halifax County, on 9 April 1958 by Miriam Wetmore. Another was seen and heard singing at Sable River, Shelburne County, by Harrison F. Lewis on 8 June 1964. Since then about 24 individuals have been reported, 1 each in Halifax, Lunenburg and Queens counties, and the rest on Brier, Sable or Seal islands. Only three have occurred in spring, none as early as the 1958 bird; one of these remained singing on territory near Susie Lake, Halifax County, from 29 May to at least 16 June 1974 (E. Cooke, S. Fullerton et al.). Reverse autumn migrants have occured as early as 21 August and as late as 17 October, and occurrences are about equally divided between September and October.

Remarks The breeding range of this readily identified species lies slightly to the south and west of Nova Scotia, reaching southwestern Maine.
