Townsend's Warbler

Townsend's Warbler

Dendroica townsendi (Townsend)

Status One record. A female seen on Sable Island on 9-10 June 1973 by Jean Boulva, Davis Finch and Ian McLaren was photographed by Finch for a first and only provincial record.

Remarks This far-western warbler has occurred only rarely as a vagrant in the eastern United States and Canada. Another individual was found in St. John's, Newfoundland, in late autumn 1983. Its dark mask makes it quite distinct from its close relative the Black-throated Green Warbler, although females of this species have some similarities to the female Blackburnian Warbler.
