Painted BuntingPasserina ciris (Linnaeus)Status One or two sight records. An adult male perched on a wire at Sable Island on 31 July 1965 was well documented by Christel Bell. A bird described as an all-green finch, the size and shape of an Indigo Bunting, was seen by Eleanor Androschuk on Sable Island in early September 1969. Remarks Previous Canadian sightings have been considered to be escapees by James et al. (1976). The species does not nest north of Tennessee and southern North Carolina, but vagrants have occurred in New England, including Maine, in recent years. The male is quite unmistakable, and the female is unlike any other finch-like bird. |
