Harris' Sparrow

Harris' Sparrow

Zonotrichia querula (Nuttall)

Status Four records. The first was an autumn bird that visited Cape Sable about 1952, observed by Betty June and Sidney Smith. An immature bird appeared at Evelyn Richardson's feeder in Barrington, Shelburne County, on 26 October 1969. An adult found by Barbara Hinds on Seal Island on 29 September 1973 was seen by others over the next two days and was photographed by Sylvia Fullerton. Another adult arrived at Thelma Hawkins' feeder at Wilmot, Annapolis County, on 16 December 1981, and stayed through most of the winter and was observed and photographed by many visitors.

Remarks This large, black-throated relative of our white-throat breeds only in northwestern Canada and winters mostly in the south-central United States. However, vagrants occasionally wander to the east coast.
