  Sand Volcanoes

Sand Volcano cast These lumpy structures were once thought to be trace fossils made by burrowing animals. A famous palaeontologist, Sir John William Dawson, even gave them a fancy name: Astropolithon hindii (ASS-TRO-PO-LITH-ON HIN-DI).

We now know that these lumps are made in wet sand. The water pushes its way up through the sand and then explodes out - that's why they're called sand "volcanoes."
