Osprey Facts

  • The Osprey is the Provincial Bird of Nova Scotia.
  • Osprey weigh 1.4 to 2 kilograms.
  • Osprey usually lay 3 eggs, about the size of a chicken egg.
  • The female does almost all of the brooding.
  • The eggs hatch in about one month.
  • Chicks try to fly at about 7 weeks of age.
  • Males and females look almost identical.
  • Fish account for 99% of its diet.
  • Nests are 1-2 metres in diameter and weigh more than 100 kilograms.
  • Osprey are snowbirds! They winter in the Southern US and Latin and Central America.
  • Breeding pairs usually form a life-long bond.
