Osprey Facts
The Osprey is the Provincial Bird of Nova Scotia.
- Osprey weigh 1.4 to 2 kilograms.
- Osprey usually lay 3 eggs, about the size of a chicken egg.
- The female does almost all of the brooding.
- The eggs hatch in about one month.
- Chicks try to fly at about 7 weeks of age.
- Males and females look almost identical.
- Fish account for 99% of its diet.
- Nests are 1-2 metres in diameter and weigh more than 100 kilograms.
- Osprey are snowbirds! They winter in the Southern US and Latin and Central America.
- Breeding pairs usually form a life-long bond.
