This Resource Box helps students understand the forest habitat as a relationship between plants, animals and the environment. In addition to a wide variety of print resources, the box contains hands-on specimens from the natural forest environment: a deer antler, animal fur and skulls, mounted leaf specimens, twig and cone specimens, and many more. Grade 1 Science – Needs and Characteristics of Living Things - Recognize that humans and other living things depend on their environment and identify personal actions that can contribute to a healthy environment
- Identify, conduct, measure and record observations about animals and plants using appropriate terminology
- Question, explore, observe, and identify the similarities and differences in how living things are able to meet their needs
Grade 2 Science – Animal Growth and Changes - Describe and features of natural and human-made environments that support the health and growth of some familiar organisms
- Identify new questions about the needs and growth patterns of other organisms
Grade 3 Science – Plant Growth and Changes - Identify and describe parts of plants and their general function
- Describe and respond to ways in which plants are important to living things and the environment and how the supply of useful plants is replenished
Grade 4 Science – Habitats - Identify questions to investigate the types of plants and/or animals at a local habitat using the terms habitat, population, and community
- Examine and investigate, using various methods and questions, local habitats and their associated populations of plants and animals
- Compare the external features, behavioral patterns, and structural and behavioral adaptations for an animal to survive in a particular habitat
- Predict how the removal of a plant or animal population affects the rest of the community and relate habitat loss to the endangerment or extinction of plants and animals
