The Train Time program introduces young children to the Museum as part of our community. Through play on our Kids’ Train, a tour of our galleries, and stories, children experience the Museum as a place that tells us about who we are, what we do, and how we make things.

Through the Train Time program, students will:

  • Describe some of the natural and constructed characteristics of their community
  • Identify connections between their community and other communities
  • Express opinions, ask questions, and listen to the ideas of others
  • Regard reading and viewing as sources of interest, enjoyment, information
  • Demonstrate an understanding that the way people live in their communities evolves over time.
  • Explain how interactions between communities have changed over time.

This program supports curriculum outcomes for the following units:

  • Grade P Social Studies, Roots and Place
  • Grade 1 Social Studies, Place and Time

Program timeline – Train Time

  • Arrival, bathrooms, hang up coats
  • 5 minutes: Welcome and introduction
  • 25 minutes: Story and play, at Kids’ Train
  • 25 minutes: “Meet the Engines” tour in the Museum galleries
  • 5 minutes: break
  • 25 minutes: Train whistle craft; train signals game
  • 5 minutes: Conclusion, and dismiss
