Wooly Weekend
Sat., Sun. & Mon. May 17th, 18th & 19th

Spring is here and the sheep at Ross Farm Museum have had their lambs and are ready for their annual shearing. There will be demonstrations in sheep shearing, washing & spinning wool. Learn about the importance of sheep to early settler’s and about the work involved to produce yarn and how woolen yarn was used to make material for the clothing necessary for the cold winter days.

Favorite Rhubarb Recipes from Rose Bank Cottage

Ever wonder what to do with all the rhubarb from your garden?
This weekend staff at Rose Bank Cottage will be sharing some of their favorite rhubarb recipes with visitors. Why don’t you bring in one of your favorite ones to share with us.

Pumpkin Planting
Sat., & Sun., June 7th & 8th

What better way to celebrate the start of the summer than to join the annual pumpkin planting days at Ross Farm Museum? Bring the children and let them plant a pumpkin seed, then they can return in the fall and harvest their pumpkin

Stave mill in Operation
Sat., & Sun., June 14th & 15th

It’s time to see the mill in action as it once was in those early days of the settlers. Today is the day to come and watch the sawyer as he saws staves that will actually be used for making barrels on the farm. It is your chance to talk to him and ask him about the importance of the saw mill, the equipment used and how the mill operates., This is the time to learn as much as you can about the mill and enjoy an interesting piece of the farm.

7th Annual Teddy Bear Picnic
Sun., July 6th

If you go down to the farm today you’re sure of a great surprise. Yes, it’s that time of year again, it’s teddy bear picnic time. Pack a picnic lunch, grab your favorite Teddy Bear and come to Ross Farm Museum for this fun and exciting day. There is so much to do and see. Not only is the farm running as usual but we will be having games and activities suitable for everyone to enjoy. After lunch, a fun contest will be held for your special Teddy if you wish to enter. The judging takes place at 2:00 pm. It should be a bear of a time for all.

It’s time to see the mill in action as it once was in those early days of the settlers. Ox Power

Today you will have the opportunity to see “Lion & Bright” the oxen at Ross Farm at work . Chat with the teamster and learn what made Oxen so important to settlers in rural Nova Scotia.

A Handful of Straw
Sat. & Sun., July 26th & 27th

Making hats by braiding natural fibers is considered an art by some, but at one time, it was simply a fact of life. When laborers were out all day under the hot sun, protection was a necessity. During the late 18th to early 19th centuries, the wearing of straw hats by farmers and laborers was quite common in both North America and Europe. This was mostly due to the fact that the materials were inexpensive and readily available.
This weekend staff will be demonstrating the tradition art of Straw hat braiding

One Room School
Sat., Sun., & Mon., Aug. 2nd , 3rd & 4th

In early days, children attended a small one room school house. Students were not divided into rooms by grade level, due to there only being one room, they had to learn their 3 “R”’s together. Now is you chance to have your turn to experience this one classroom setting.
Step back in time with us and become a student again. Learn about current events, the need for proper figuring skills, and the importance of good penmanship. Try your hand at Quill pen writing or take part in a spelling bee.
There should be a lesson to be learned for everyone.

New Ross Birthday
Thur., Aug 7th

Today is the 191st birthday of the settlement of New Ross .Birthday cake and refreshments will be served in Rosebank Cottage .

Tatting Demonstration in Rose Bank Cottage
Sat. & Sun., Aug 16th & 17th

Tatting has been described as “threads lovingly shaped around air to create beautiful lace.” Tatting was considered very fashionable for the higher classes during the 18th & 19th centuries. The shuttle and thread were carried in a little knotting bag and a fashionable lady would never be seen without one.
Visit Ross Farm Museum this weekend and chat with our interpreters as they demonstrate the beautiful art of both needle and shuttle tatting.

Yellow Birch Hat Making
Sat. & Sun., Aug 23rd & 24th

Staff will demonstrate hat making using strips of wood known as "sheens" stripped from freshly-gathered yellow-birch logs.

Maritime Hand Mowing Championships
Sat., Aug. 23

Fifth Annual Hand Mowing Competition Coming to New Ross

For the second year, Ross Farm Museum will be hosting Rural Delivery’s Maritime Hand Mowing Competition on Saturday, August 23, 2008. Last year there were 20 competitors, aged 12 years to 96 years. This year even more competitors are expected. Along with the Hand Mowing Competition and scythe related discussion groups, there will be hay making, hay piling, threshing and grain stooking demonstrations. The ever popular hay forking competition will be back again also. This is a day reminiscent of summer fair days of the past that the whole family enjoyed.

There will be music and a “tasters” BBQ over the noon hour. Museum visitors, Competitors and Spectators are encouraged to pack a lunch of local foods and come for a picnic. Local foods can be purchased Saturday morning at the New Ross Country Farm Market in the parking lot at Ross Farm Museum. There are also local restaurants that offer a broad range of foods. The “buy local” picnic will get people ready for Select Nova Scotia’s Incredible Picnic to be held the next day, Sunday, August 24th at various locations around the Province.

Family Participation Days

Have you ever wanted to milk a cow or help in blacksmithing? Today is your chance, bring the whole family down and try your hand at the skills that your fore fathers took for granted as just part of their everyday lives. It’s your chance to step back in time and do some everyday hands on work. Different activities will be scheduled each day such as wood punching, quill pen writing, taffy pulling, candle dipping , cow milking, and blacksmithing. Join in the fun and you will receive a Participant Certificate. Today is definitely a day not to be missed it’s your chance to experience the 1800's like never before.

Pumpkin Harvest

Thanksgiving Day Celebration

Can’t think of anything special to do on Thanksgiving day? Bring the family out for some good old fashioned fun. There will be so much to do and see. It is your chance to step back in time and experience Thanksgiving settlers style.
Enjoy demonstrations of open-hearth cooking, coopering and sauerkraut making. Take part in a fun auction for everyone in the afternoon at 2:00pm

Lunenburg County Pudding
Sat. & Sun., Oct 18th & 19th

Come and witness a Lunenburg County Pudding Making.
On Saturday and Sunday meat will be made into traditional Lunenburg County Pudding. Come and see how this delicacy is prepared.

Christmas in the Country
Sat. & Sun., Dec. 6th & 7th

As part of the New Ross Christmas Festival staff at Ross Farm Museum have put together a great program for your enjoyment. Step back in time to experience Christmas in the Country. At Rose Bank Cottage sample traditional dishes from the period such as plum pudding, sugar cookies & warm spiced cider while you enjoy some of your favorite Christmas carols .
There will be craft activities in the school house, visitor center and farm workshop.
Weather permitting there will be horse drawn rides.
