Interpreter Sandy Anthony entertains on the harpsichord in her role as Barb Delort, wife to one of Louisbourg's wealthiest men. Note the lingerie cap on her head. The story goes that the wealthier the woman, the smaller the head covering. This is because well-to-do women were able to shower more often, therefore their hair was cleaner and the need to contain head-lice and dirt lessened. Also note the chairs: men's chairs had arm rests while women's were open on the sides to allow room for large panniers and skirts. |
