Before launching a model schooner, interpretive staff at the Fisheries Museum of the Atlantic share superstitions of the sea with visiting school children and the Funky Museum Roadshow entourage. Good luck superstitions include seagulls flying as ship is launched, high tides when launching the boat and having a boat veer to the east once launched. Bad luck superstitions include having pigs on board as squealing noises were believed to steal the wind or wearing grey mittens, which signified grey skies. At the museum, learn why only the cook was allowed to whistle at sea and about the key people to invite for a successful boat launch.
