Dory Shop Museum interpreter Janice displays an early depth sounder. A hunk of lard was placed on the end of the sounder and it was lowered into the water. After a moment, fisherman would pull-up the sounder and if any sand was caught in the lard, they'd know approximately how deep the water was by the corresponding length of the rope. Funky fact!
