Garry Sowerby learns how to whittle lobster pegs at the Musée Acadien de Pubnico-Ouest. Before rubber bands, these pegs were used to stop the lobster from pinching fishermen. The now illegal pegs are inserted into the lobster's joint when claws are closed and prevents the lobster from re-opening his claws. In the upper-right corner of the image, you can see a small, bundled brown bag. The interpreter explained that as a young girl, she and her relatives would make lobster pegs and fit 1000 per bundled bag. They would then trade bags of lobster pegs for flour or other goods. The 1000 lobster pegs were worth approximately seventy-five cents.
