Ross-Thomson House & Store Museum
Shelburne
Nova Scotia, Canada

Exterior Explore Nova Scotia's only 18th-century store

Travel back to Nova Scotia of the 1780s and the brand-new town of Shelburne. During the Loyalist boom, this community was twice the size of Halifax, and larger than Montreal. The population of more than 10,000 was looking for a new life after the American War of Independence.

Visit Nova Scotia's only 18th-century store, greet the clerk, and step up to a store counter stocked with the kind of goods George and Robert Ross bartered and sold in the 1780s.

Like most of the new arrivals, the brothers came to Nova Scotia from the United States, where they had been involved in trade with the West Indies. Seasoned merchants, they brought to the town both necessities and luxuries from around the world.

In their house and store on Charlotte Lane, you can spend some time inside their living quarters furnished in the sparse but elegant style of the period.

Above the shop, see the Militia Room. You might even meet a 1780s militia guard!
