3 Day Program

Memories to Treasure for a Lifetime

Hands On History is a program in which groups of children from grades 4, 5 and 6 can experience Village life. Each group (maximum of 30 children) will stay on site for 3 days (48 hours), dress in period costume (1860 - 1914), visit the buildings, help the interpreters with chores, eat home baked treats and be involved in hands on activities. This program is designed to educate children about the past in a manner that is both fun and informative.

After arriving on site at noon and eating their own boxed lunch, the children are given their assigned rooms in the house provided for their stay. Larger groups will then be divided in half and one half of the group will be outfitted in period costume to go visiting buildings, while the other half will visit the lumber camp and sawmill as well as collect firewood for the evening campfire. They then tour the site. Building visits are 15 or 30 minutes, depending on the building.

The evening meal for the first day is provided, as well as those for the remaining days. Quiet time and bedtime is 9:00-10:00 pm. Breakfast is from 7:30-8:30 am. On the second day, at approximately 1:00 pm, the children will switch roles. At noon on the third day, the children return home.

This program has been developed with the assistance of Sherbrooke Village staff, local resources and the Department of Natural Resources and supports the curriculum of grades 4, 5, and 6.
